Computer Based Test (CBT) is no longer an unfamiliar phrase to students and job seekers in Nigeria as this has become a widely acceptable form of accessing students seeking admission into the institution of higher learning, job seeker seeking employment in private or government organisations. Even civil servants / public servants are not left out as Computer Based Test (CBT) has become the new exam format for their promotion exams. Just recently, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has also introduced driving computer based test to access applicants applying for driver’s license, hence only applicants that pass the CBT test are qualified for issuance.

Computer Based Test popularly called CBT for short is a type of candidates assessment exam usually done via the computer. It could be done online or offline but whichever the case it is done on the computer which remove the need for pen and paper.

The recent interest in this exam format in Nigeria has gradually eroded the need for manually written test that usually require most candidates to travel out of their residence to the exam venue as most Computer Based Test are usually conducted remotely online.

Our recent random survey among Nigerian students, job seekers, employees etc revealed a mixed reaction whether Computer Based Test (CBT) is the best form of candidates assessment or manually written test. Some see CBT exam format as a welcome development while others see it as an additional stress to candidate writing assessment exams.
However, those in support of Computer Based Test as a means of accessing candidates knowledge seemed to have taken the lead. From the above hypothesis, we can draw out the advantages and disadvantage of Computer Based Test (CBT) in Nigeria.
Advantages of Computer Based Test as a Way of Accessing Candidates’s Knowledge in Nigeria
- Most CBT are done remotely online thereby taking away the stress of travelling to exam venue
- The waiting period of candidates before seeing their results after their exam is usually very short as the results for most CBT test are usually automated which means that results are displayed instantly on final submission of the test
- The level of fairness on the part of the examiners for a Computer Based Test is very high compared to manually written test as candidates already have idea of their performance after the exam
- Time taking to conduct CBT is usually very short as most of the activities are automated
- This type of exam format enable examiners access or test so many candidates at once as physical location for the test may not be needed thereby removing the stress of sourcing for exam venue

Disadvantages of Computer Based Test as a Way of Assessing Candidates Knowledge in Nigeria
In spite of the numerous advantages of Computer Based Test, few candidates still have their worries over CBT test. Below are some few points to backup their worries which could also be seen as disadvantages.
- ICT is yet to be fully rooted in Nigeria, hence most candidates for the this Computer Based Test have no basic knowledge of computer. Some cannot even handle a simple mouse to navigate the computer windows thereby resulting in a very poor performance in the CBT test even though such candidates are highly knowledgeable and would have be among the best if the exam were to be written manually.
- Still because of the poor technological advancement in Nigeria, For CBT test scheduled to hold at a particular venue, most computer system provided for candidates to write the test usually perform below capacity therefore affecting their general performance the test.
- Even the Computer Based Test done online remotely is another odious task for candidates. Most of the portal where these tests are written are usually poorly developed and cannot handle the high traffic of candidates sent to the portal to write the exam
- Even in a situation where the cbt test portal is good, the internet service providers in Nigeria are another obstructing mountains these candidates need to climb as there is no stable internet connection in Nigeria no matter your data subscription.
Conclusion – Our Take
Having Dotted our i’s & Crossed our t’s on this research, though there are few cons of Computer Based Test in Nigeria, but it’s quite obvious that the pros outweigh the cons. Again as an HR company that has years of experience in candidates assessment exams and also well familiar with both the manually written test and Computer Based test, we can comfortably say that using Computer Based Test as the new way of accessing candidates knowledge in Nigeria is a welcome development and should be embraced in its entirety.
